Dazzling duo: Burbage, Niederhauser

Pam Pack doubles team tabbed WDN Tennis Players of the Year

Shannon Niederhauser playfully jumped into the arms of Davey Ann Burbage, pretending they had just won a big match, prior to an interview at the Washington High School tennis courts. When they sat down for the interview, the two got serious.
They shared that same mentality — joking around at times, but getting serious when the time called for it, all season. It certainly worked for the two. The Washington Pam Pack tennis players, who joined forces as a doubles team, went 11-3 overall and advanced to the second round of the N.C. High School Athletic Association Class 3-A regional tournament.
Because of their success, Burbage and Niederhauser were named the WDN Tennis Players of the Year.
“Being a senior and this being my second year of tennis, this is a great award,” Burbage said. “I hope it leads to many more.”
Niederhauser shared in Burbage’s enthusiasm.
“It’s exciting to win it,” Niederhauser said. “It’s honorable.”
The Pam Pack duo played together for just six weeks. The two had other partners before they joined forces, and the move certainly paid off in large dividends.
Washington co-coach Michelle Elks, who was assisted by co-coach Beth Pippin, said she was happy to see Burbage and Niederhauser receive the honor.
“I’m very proud of them for getting the award,” Elks said. “I think they deserve it and they earned it. They were able to jell as a team and use their strengths to work together.”
Elks said the two used their abilities to form a strong team.
“Davey Ann was so strong at the net,” Elks said. “She’s tall and when you have a tall, aggressive person at the net, that can be intimidating. Because of that, your opponents will try to keep it away from the net. When they do that, Shannon was back there and she can dig the ball out and keep it in play.”
The two players used their athleticism to cover plenty of ground on the courts. Burbage also plays basketball and softball for Washington, while Niederhauser is captain of the swim team and also plays soccer.
It wasn’t strictly athleticism that led to their success. The Pam Pack players said their mindset played a big role.
“We work well together and we went out there to have fun,” Niederhauser said. “We didn’t take it quite as seriously as a lot of other doubles teams. That happens to work for us.”
The attitude carried Burbage and Niederhauser all the way to Barton College for the regional tournament. They opened with a 7-5, 6-1 win over White Oak’s Dominique Moore and Munazza Abraham. Rocky Mount’s Kate Gray and Carolina Gray were able to capture a win in straight sets over the Washington pair in the second round.
While happy to earn a victory at regionals, they agreed that a win in the Coastal Conference tournament over South Central’s Elizabeth Campbell and Molly Hosteller, the top two players for the Falcons, was the highlight of the season.
“Beating South Central was definitely the highlight,” said Burbage, who went 14-3 overall in doubles action. “We lost the first set 6-1 and then we were down 4-2 in the second set, but we came back to win 7-6. Then we won the third set 6-3. That helped us get to regionals.”
Getting to regionals was a far cry from Niederhauser’s preseason goal.
“I started at the bottom of the ladder, just like last year, and I had to work my way up,” said Niederhauser, who is hoping for more tennis success as a senior next year. “My goal was just to get into the top six (singles players). That’s all I really cared about.”
Along the way, Burbage and Niederhauser formed a tight bond. They clicked instantly, and their cohesiveness led to plenty of wins.
“We just liked having fun,” said Burbage, who hopes to attend college at UNC-Wilmington next year. “We had a good time.”

The N.C. High School Athletic Association has released average daily attendance figures for member schools. The association will break up each class, in a single-A and double-A format, for the playoffs which begin Nov. 14.

The "AA" in each class will be the 32 largest QUALIFIERS into the playoffs and the "A" will be the 32 smallest qualifiers.

AREA SOCCER TEAMS QUALIFY FOR PLAYOFFS

NCHSAA 3-A playoffs
Washington (12-6-1), the No. 2 seed in the Coastal Conference, plays at White Oak (10-10-2), the No. 2 seed in the Mideastern Conference, Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.
White Oak earned the home playoff game based on seeding priority.
The winner faces the survivor between Northern Nash (18-3-2), the top seed in the New 6 Conference, and Wilson Beddingfield (7-12-2), the fourth seed in the Eastern Carolina Conference, in the second round.
Washington and White Oak will be in the same conference next year once re-alignment takes place.

Washington hasn’t won a playoff game since 2004, a 6-1 win over Wilson Beddingfield in the first round. The Pack was knocked out of the playoffs in the second round with a 2-1 loss to West Carteret.

Washington lost 6-1 to Jacksonville in 2007.

NCHSAA 1-A playoffs
The Northside Panthers and Williamston Tigers, both out of the Atlantic Conference, qualified for the playoffs as wild-card entries. Both will be on the road for first-round games on Wednesday beginning at 7 p.m.
Coach Billy Bunn’s Northside Panthers (8-5) will play in Holly Ridge at Dixon (10-7-4), the No. 2 seed in the Coastal Plains Conference.
The Tigers (11-8) will play at James Kenan (9-5-2), the top seed in the Super Six Conference.
The Northside-Dixon and Williamston-James Kenan winners will square off in the second round.


Northside fell 9-1 to Hobbton in 2007.


Williamston lost 3-1 to North Johnston in 2007.
Williamston lost 6-5 in overtime to Manteo in 2006

Sophomore slams 16 kills in victory

GREENVILLE -- Lizzy Bruin danced around a bit while listening to the music during timeouts in East Carolina’s volleyball match against UNC-Wilmington. The sophomore spiker certainly got her groove on when the teams were on the court, walloping a match-high 16 kills in ECU’s 3-1 victory.
The kill total, coming in a 25-21, 25-23, 19-25, 25-15 victory Wednesday evening at Minges Coliseum, was one off Bruin’s career-high. Bruin credited setter Hannah Fenker with her success.
“We connected really well,” Bruin said. “It’s just about having confidence in each other. I have confidence in her and she has confidence in me.
“I felt pretty good out there. I saw the block really well tonight and I was just trying to hit around it. I feel pretty content with what I did.”
Bruin wasn’t even sure about her status with the team after having shoulder surgery in the summer. However, she aggressively rehabbed the shoulder and seems to be as strong as ever.
“It was definitely all about confidence,” Bruin said. “Usually when you come back from shoulder surgery, it’s hard to get your confidence back. I just knew that I had to come back and play my game.
“I didn’t expect to be doing this well, but I worked so hard and I think I deserve to be doing this.”
Erica Banning added 10 kills for the Pirates (9-4) as she and Bruin dominated the middle of the net.
“Our middle hitters did a great job hitting tonight,” ECU coach Chris Rushing said. “Erica and Lizzy were really the ones that pretty much pulled us through.”
ECU took a 2-0 lead in the match, only to see the Seahawks (5-5) force a fourth game. The Pirates and Seahawks were tied at 10-10 before ECU started to pull away.
With her team leading 17-13, Bruin rocketed a ball to the floor that fell for a kill, which seemed to light a late spark in the Pirates. Banning followed with a couple kills a short time later for a 21-15 advantage.
The Pirates finished off the match with kills by Amanda Lutzow (seven kills, 10 digs), Fenker (four kills, 43 assists) and Banning.
“That made it a lot more comfortable for them,” Rushing said. “They were able to settle down a bit. It was nice to see that, after we lost a set, it was nice to come back and finish strong.”
While Fenker had a couple kills in the final set, the junior was the one normally setting the table for the hitters. She played a near-flawless match in the victory. The junior passed on the praise to ECU’s big hitters on the night.
“Lizzy and Erica did great,” Fenker said. “I think they both hit over .500 and that’s phenomenal for both of them to do that.”
Fenker shrugged off her own solid night on the court.
“It’s not so much about how I play,” Fenker said. “I’d rather get a win than me play really well.”
The Pirates and Seahawks traded points throughout the first set. Bruin started to shine early, while Lutzow, Stephanie Turner (six kills, eight digs) and Banning had key kills late in the set to help ECU pull away.
The Seahawks grabbed the early control in the second set, 6-4. A pair of smashes by Bruin helped energize the Pirates, giving them a 13-12 lead.
Britney Roper (three kills) had a kill that gave ECU a 19-16 cushion, but Wilmington was able to respond and took a 21-20 lead. A powerful bash by Bruin tied it up, while her fifth kill of the set gave ECU a 24-22 edge. A miss-hit by the Seahawks gave ECU the victory.
ECU found itself in a hole early in the third set and could never recover. Paula McConnell, Lindsey Strucko and Megan Nash, who all had nine kills, led the Seahawks to victory to force another set.
Bruin, Banning, Roper and Fenker all had put-downs early in the fourth set to give ECU a 10-5 advantage, only to see Wilmington storm back to pull within 11-10.
However, Bruin began to assert herself at the net, smacking four kills in a six-point barrage that gave the Pirates an 18-13 lead. It was all Pirates the rest of the way.
Trish Monroe tallied 20 digs to lead the defensive effort.
The Pirates are back in action this weekend as they host the East Carolina Invitational. ECU will take on Conference USA-foe Marshall at 7 p.m. Friday, followed by matches against Morgan State and N.C. State on Saturday.
“It’s going to be tough,” Rushing. “We’re playing a very good team in Marshall. I think the girls will come out with some intensity.”
