A salute to Jon Martin: a true hero

Too often in sports, an athlete can be labeled a “hero” for making a game-winning shot, hitting a game-winning home run or scoring a game-winning touchdown.

They aren’t heroes. Far from it.

And I’ve always tried to steer clear of that misnomer.

This sports column, however, is about a hero. A true American hero.

This column is about Staff Sgt. Jon Martin. Yes, Jon was an athlete. But he was so much more.

Jon was a soldier who paid the ultimate sacrifice while doing what he believed in most — fighting for his country.

While serving his country in Iraq, Jon was hit by a roadside bomb on Nov. 9. Just as he did for his country, Jon fought valiantly for his life.

However, Jon died on Thanksgiving Day, leaving behind his wife, Becki, and children Alaina, 8; Allie, 5; and Trenton, 10 months.

When a mutual friend passed the news on to me, a flood of emotions swept over me. There were feelings of anger, bitterness, sadness and pride. Pride because of what Jon was doing with his life.

Pride for simply knowing what kind of man Jon turned out to be.

As I mentioned in an earlier column, Jon was one of the first athletes I covered when I broke into the sports writing business over 15 years ago.

Jon, a 1993 graduate of Bellevue High School (Bellevue, Ohio), was a member of the Bellevue Redmen cross country and track teams. I’ll always remember his stride, his deep voice and his quick smile.

As I thought about Jon, I went through some old newspaper clippings to see what I could read about him from his days with the Redmen. Simply seeing his name brought me a smile.

There were other names and faces in photos I easily recognized while leafing through the papers -- Amber Bollinger, Brad Bollinger, Randy Bollinger, Jessica Chumley, Janisha Chumley, Justin Walters, Danny Paul, Johnny Bollinger, Billy McClain, Cathy Slosser, Cassie Arp, Kristy Baptista, Meredith Hartley, Eddie Baptista, Paul Ayers, Erica Caranfa, Josh Didion, Shawn “Sunshine” Ray, Kevin Hay, Laura Ray, Sarah Ray, Ryan Falknor, Dave Falknor, Ben Falknor, Jeff Polley, Pete Lepley, Brad Snyder, Ben Fox, Chad Kuhns, Russ Kuhns.

Each name brought a different smile to my face.

I don’t remember what kind of numbers they put up, but I fondly remember each of these kids. I remember being proud of them for their accomplishments, and I’m proud of them for the adults they have become.

The same holds true for the kids I’m privileged to cover today. I won’t remember how many yards they ran for or how many touchdowns they scored.

But I will remember these kids and smile.

Just as I did with Staff Sgt. Jon Martin.

An athlete. A Redmen. A husband. A father. A friend.

A true American hero.

Pirates are Hawaii bound

It looks like the East Carolina Pirates are Hawaii-bound. A player on the team has informed me the team heard the news this morning.

The game will be played Dec. 23 against a team to be determined.

It's No. 7 seed Roanoke (10-4) at No. 1 seed and fourth-ranked Plymouth (14-0) in the NCHSAA Class 1-A East Regional championship game. Friday night's winner at Plymouth will advance to the state championship game at Carter-Finley Stadium in Raleigh on Dec. 8 in an 11 a.m. game against the winner between No. 3 seed Salemburg Lakewood (a 22-21 winner over South Stanly) and No. 1 seed, fifth-ranked and undefeated North Duplin (a 20-0 winner over East Wilkes).

Practice on Thanksgiving

Both the Roanoke Redskins and Plymouth Vikings had some work to do before they could settle down at the kitchen table to enjoy Thanksgiving.

The Redskins and Vikings both practiced Thursday morning in preparation for Friday's NCHSAA Class 1-A state playoff third-round games. Roanoke plays host to Perquimans and Plymouth is at home against Jones Senior, the team that knocked the Vikings out of the playoffs last year. Roanoke has already beaten Perquimans once this year thanks to a late rally.

I'm looking for the Redskins and Vikings to win, which would set up an East Regional championship game at Plymouth next Friday night. The winner of that would move on to the state championship game Dec. 8 in Raleigh.

I’ve never taken the athletes I cover for granted.
From the first sporting event I ever covered -- a football game pitting the Bellevue Redmen against the Bucyrus Redmen some 16 years ago -- to today, I’ve always had an admiration and appreciation for all student-athletes.
I’ve grown close to quite a few, and call some my best friends to this day.
That’s why when tragedies strike, it hits me so hard.
I’ve dealt with untimely deaths before, from a suicide to a motorcycle crash to a car accident that have taken student-athletes, my friends, too soon.
I was reminded again Thursday just how fragile life can be.
That we should cherish each and every day.
Staff Sgt. Jon Martin is one of the first athletes I covered when I got into the sports writing profession. He was a superb cross country and track athlete for the Bellevue Redmen.
Jon was a leader and a classy guy.
It came as no surprise to me when I heard he was joining the military.
It did come as a surprise, and hit me like a ton of bricks, when I found out Jon, a 1993 graduate of Bellevue High School, was severely injured by a roadside bomb Nov. 9 while serving his country in Iraq.
Jon, who continued to run after high school as he took up marathons, cruelly lost his left leg by amputation caused by the blast.
He also had to have his spleen removed, while suffering a broken arm, pelvis and punctured lung.
Jon, in a medically-induced coma, is now in Germany fighting for his life. He’s on a dialysis machine because of failing kidneys, along with a ventilator.
Jon, who is a platoon leader for the 101st Airborne Division based in Fort Campbell, Ky., worked in air assault.
The tragedy hit harder when I read that Jon now has three young children -- Alaina, 8; Allie, 5; and Trenton, 10 months, counting on him.
Jon’s sister, Heather, married a good friend, Brad Bollinger, who is among the top three greatest male athletes I’ve ever covered.
Brad’s sister, Amber, is the best female athlete I’ve covered.
They’re strong physically and emotionally and I know they’ll be strong for the Martin family during this trying time.
And I know Jon will be strong, too.
I’m hoping and praying Jon recovers and does so quickly.
I can still picture Jon running through the woods leading the pack in his sweaty red uniform. And that’s the way I’ll remember him, being in charge and leading the way.

Three area teams are still alive in the NCHSAA Class 1-A state football playoffs. Two of them meet tonight when No. 7 seed Roanoke plays at No. 2 seed Williamston. The Tigers took a 26-20 overtime win against the Redskins in the final week of the regular season in Robersonville.

Plymouth, undefeated and the top seed, plays host to North Edgecombe. The Vikings have been streamrolling over everybody.

With very "winnable" games the following week, Plymouth and either Williamston or Roanoke could be meeting in the East Regional championship game.

I think Plymouth wins tonight, 35-7.
And I'll go with Roanoke 27-21 because Williamston, even though its at home, doesn't have all its weapons.
