A perfect ending to a perfect season

A perfect ending to a perfect season

Commentary by KEVIN TRAVIS, Sports Editor

It started with cramps, strains, bumps, bruises and practice after practice during the brutally hot days of August.

The Plymouth Vikings, like every other team in North Carolina, hit the practice field with the sole goal of winning a state championship.

Sure, it was a lofty goal. The Vikings had never won a state football championship in school history.

Sure, Plymouth had exited the playoffs early in its most recent ventures. But this Plymouth team was unlike any other Plymouth team in history.

This team, led by its seniors, was hungry.

The Vikings tasted victory early and often. Coach Robert Cody led his Vikings to a 12-6 win over Farmville Central in the season opener.

The next 14 games, leading up to the N.C. High School Athletic Association Class 1-A state championship game at Raleigh’s Carter-Finley Stadium, wouldn’t be close.

Behind a punishing offensive line, two lightning-quick running backs, a steady quarterback, a stingy defense and a close-knit coaching staff, the 2007 version of the Plymouth Vikings was determined to go down in history as something special.

The Vikings went on to outscore their opposition 684 to 72, an average of 42.75 to 4.5, throughout the 16 games.

Thanks to the vicious blocking by the offensive linemen, led by William Hunt and Blake Bryan, Plymouth could almost score at will. Tobias Clagon and Andre Mitchell ran wild as both topped the 2,000-yard mark. Clagon finished the year with 2,123 yards rushing and 24 touchdowns. Mitchell added 2,006 yards and 27 scores.

The defense recorded eight shutouts along the way, including three in the playoffs.

Linebacker Dasheen Perry, who also had fun and put up some solid numbers at quarterback, racked up a team-high 196 tackles.

Lynell Woods, another impressive linebacker, came up with 174 tackles. That includes 12 quarterback sacks.

Angelo Sharpless was a monster at defensive back. The senior, a Division I prospect in basketball, capped his prep football career with a slam dunk. In earning Most Valuable Player honors in the state championship game, Sharpless snagged four passes for 88 yards, taking two of them for scores.

He also snagged two interceptions.

That gave Sharpless a state-best 16 interceptions this year, three of which he returned for touchdowns. The interception total is the second best in NCHSAA history, tying D'Angelo Lewis of Douglas Byrd (1998) and James Houston of Starmount (2002).

Harold Johnson of Glen Alpine holds the record with 17 interceptions in 1967.

There were several big numbers recorded throughout Plymouth’s season.

But for Cody, who has won over 140 games in his 23-year head coaching career at Plymouth, he’ll only remember one, a 20-13 nod over North Duplin for the first state championship in Plymouth’s football history.

It was a magical season.

It ended with a bucket of cold water dumped over Cody on a sunny December afternoon.

It ended with a few dozen Vikings smiling from ear to ear, hugging one another in pure joy.

It ended with a strong contingent of Plymouth fans jumping out and down.

It ended with a state championship.

A perfect ending to a perfect season.

Vikings to play for state title

The Plymouth Vikings (15-0) will be playing for the NCHSAA Class 1-A state championship game on Saturday, Dec. 8. Coach Robert Cody's squad will play the North Duplin Rebels (14-0) at 11 a.m. at Raleigh's Carter-Finley Stadium.
Congrats to Plymouth.

ECU to Hawaii

East Carolina officially accepted the bid to the Hawaii Bowl on Saturday. The game will be played Dec. 23 in Honolulu. I know the players are pumped about going to Hawaii.
ECU's opponent is yet to be determined.... I'm thinking Boise State. That could be a fun matchup.

A salute to Jon Martin: a true hero

A salute to Jon Martin: a true hero

By Kevin Travis, Sports Editor

Too often in sports, an athlete can be labeled a “hero” for making a game-winning shot, hitting a game-winning home run or scoring a game-winning touchdown.

They aren’t heroes. Far from it.

And I’ve always tried to steer clear of that misnomer.

This sports column, however, is about a hero. A true American hero.

This column is about Staff Sgt. Jon Martin. Yes, Jon was an athlete. But he was so much more.

Jon was a soldier who paid the ultimate sacrifice while doing what he believed in most — fighting for his country.

While serving his country in Iraq, Jon was hit by a roadside bomb on Nov. 9. Just as he did for his country, Jon fought valiantly for his life.

However, Jon died on Thanksgiving Day, leaving behind his wife, Becki, and children Alaina, 8; Allie, 5; and Trenton, 10 months.

When a mutual friend passed the news on to me, a flood of emotions swept over me. There were feelings of anger, bitterness, sadness and pride. Pride because of what Jon was doing with his life.

Pride for simply knowing what kind of man Jon turned out to be.

As I mentioned in an earlier column, Jon was one of the first athletes I covered when I broke into the sports writing business over 15 years ago.

Jon, a 1993 graduate of Bellevue High School (Bellevue, Ohio), was a member of the Bellevue Redmen cross country and track teams. I’ll always remember his stride, his deep voice and his quick smile.

As I thought about Jon, I went through some old newspaper clippings to see what I could read about him from his days with the Redmen. Simply seeing his name brought me a smile.

There were other names and faces in photos I easily recognized while leafing through the papers -- Amber Bollinger, Brad Bollinger, Randy Bollinger, Jessica Chumley, Janisha Chumley, Justin Walters, Danny Paul, Johnny Bollinger, Billy McClain, Cathy Slosser, Cassie Arp, Kristy Baptista, Meredith Hartley, Eddie Baptista, Paul Ayers, Erica Caranfa, Josh Didion, Shawn “Sunshine” Ray, Kevin Hay, Laura Ray, Sarah Ray, Ryan Falknor, Dave Falknor, Ben Falknor, Jeff Polley, Pete Lepley, Brad Snyder, Ben Fox, Chad Kuhns, Russ Kuhns.

Each name brought a different smile to my face.

I don’t remember what kind of numbers they put up, but I fondly remember each of these kids. I remember being proud of them for their accomplishments, and I’m proud of them for the adults they have become.

The same holds true for the kids I’m privileged to cover today. I won’t remember how many yards they ran for or how many touchdowns they scored.

But I will remember these kids and smile.

Just as I did with Staff Sgt. Jon Martin.

An athlete. A Redmen. A husband. A father. A friend.

A true American hero.

Practice on Thanksgiving

Both the Roanoke Redskins and Plymouth Vikings had some work to do before they could settle down at the kitchen table to enjoy Thanksgiving.

The Redskins and Vikings both practiced Thursday morning in preparation for Friday's NCHSAA Class 1-A state playoff third-round games. Roanoke plays host to Perquimans and Plymouth is at home against Jones Senior, the team that knocked the Vikings out of the playoffs last year. Roanoke has already beaten Perquimans once this year thanks to a late rally.

I'm looking for the Redskins and Vikings to win, which would set up an East Regional championship game at Plymouth next Friday night. The winner of that would move on to the state championship game Dec. 8 in Raleigh.

Area stars have many reasons to be thankful

Area stars have many reasons to be thankful
Thanks to this profession, I’ve met some incredible people.
I’m thankful I have had the opportunity to cover them in athletics and even more thankful that they’ve become friends.
As I did last year, I’ve asked several what they are thankful for and they were nice enough to share their thoughts with me.
(Meredith Knox, former Washington star and current Anderson University softball player)
“There is so much in my life to be thankful for. First of all, I give all my thanks to God for all of the blessings that He has given me. My family is one of the biggest blessings in my life. Without them, I don't know where I would be. I am also so thankful for my close friends who have impacted my life so much. I love the fact that I get to continue to play sports at the collegiate level. I feel so honored to get the chance to do that. And, lastly, I thank God so much for the blessing of my little niece, Lilly, who was only here for a short time but touched so many lives.”
(T.J. Hose, ECU standout pitcher)
“I'm thankful for my family and friends. I'm thankful for being a baseball player here at ECU and all of the great people I have met at ECU. Lastly, I’m thankful for my relationship with God and all of the blessings He has bestowed upon me.”
(M.J. Williams, former Mattamuskeet star and current Lees-McRae softball player)
“I am most thankful for my family for supporting me and always being there throughout my four years of college. I am thankful for all of my friends that I have met and made at Louisburg and Lees-McRae. I’m thankful for God and how He has kept me safe and allowing me to continue playing softball in college.”
(Joe Davis, former Emmanuel star and current USMMA basketball player)
“I'm thankful for God, family, good health and for making it this far at a military service academy.”
(Elton Coffield, former Williamston great and current BSW Sixers basketball player)
“I’m thankful for my family and friends support while I’m over here in Germany, getting paid for what I love to do.”
(Marella Peele, former Washington star and current Elon student)
“I am thankful that I have made it to my senior year at Elon University and for the wonderful and challenging journey that has been. I am very thankful for the joy and support that comes from my family and friends and all the good and hard experiences in college that have enriched my life tremendously. I'm also thankful God knows where I'll be after graduation because right now, I haven't got a clue!”
(Rufus Wilson, former Washington great)
“I am very thankful for my wife, Nikole, and my beautiful two little girls, Ruhkayla and Ruhkaitlyn, as well as my mother and father (Brenda and Pete) for all of their support throughout the years.”
(Augusta Johnson, former Southside star and current Pitt Community College volleyball player)
“I’m thankful to have my family supporting me in everything I do and to help push me to keep that drive I have to get accepted into the nursing program at Pitt. I’m thankful for my best friend and my boyfriend for both being true to me and being the best there is.”
(Marshall Fowle, former Washington standout and current N.C. State student)
“I’m very thankful for the opportunity that was given to me to be able to play sports in the first place. There are many people all over the world that would love to do what I did, and because I was lucky enough to be given the chance, I am very thankful. I am also very thankful for the opportunity to attend a great university and further my education, and I couldn't have done this all without my loving family and friends.”
(Cameron Whitehead, former Washington star and current ECU student)
“I am very thankful for the wonderful friends and family that I am so very lucky to have. I am also very thankful for the talents I have been given to play sports. God has truly blessed my life, in more ways than one.”
(Meredith Whitehead, former Washington standout and current D.H. Conley teacher and coach)

(Nigel Rodgers, former Washington standout and current N.C. Wesleyan football player)
“I’m thankful for my family and friends, being healthy, and being alive another day.”
(Kelley Wernert, record-setting volleyball player at ECU)
“I'm thankful for the health and support of my family. I'm so glad I get to spend the holidays back at home with those people closest to me. I'm thankful for such an understanding and fun roommate this year, and my ability to make people laugh and smile. I'm also extremely thankful for my athletic ability and my success as a Division 1 volleyball player!”
(Trent Whitehead, former Washington great and current ECU baseball player)

(Jessica Johnson, ECU softball player)
“I'm thankful for my health, my loving family, all of my amazing friends, and my bulldog, Butkus.”
(Gina Valenti, former Washington star and current Lees-McRae cross country star)
“I am thankful for everyone who cheered me on, even if they were from a different team.
I am thankful for my team in ninth grade, who believed that I could accomplish more than I had ever dreamed of. I am thankful for those who helped me, not only in running, but in school and everyday life.”
(Beth Nolan, ECU softball player)
“I have a lot to be thankful for! I am thankful for my family; I am thankful for my health; I am thankful for having such great friends; I am thankful for being able to spend thanksgiving with my family.”
(Stephanie Holton, former Columbia great and current Shenandoah University basketball player)
“I’m extremely thankful for the family and friends God has blessed me with. If it hadn’t been for them, I wouldn't have made it to where I am today! Especially my dad, mom and brother -- they pushed me to always do my best and were there for me through all I've went through. They all had their own part in shaping me into who I have grown to be!”
(Darryl Lawhorn, former ECU baseball great and current professional baseball player)
“I’m thankful for my family and friends who have encouraged me to continue pursuing my goals. I’m thankful to have the opportunity to play under one of the greatest coaches and men I have ever met; that, of course, is Coach Keith LeClair. I’m also thankful to all Pirates fans who support all ECU athletes and continue to do so.”
(Rachel Perkinson, former Washington star and current ECU student)
“I am thankful for my family and friends, and all of the people who have supported me throughout the years. I am thankful for all of the opportunities I have been given at Washington High School, and I am thankful for the new experiences at East Carolina University this year.”
(Lizzy Bruin, ECU volleyball player)
“I'm thankful for all the opportunities given to me because it didn't seem possible in my upbringing. I'm thankful for my friends and family for always being here. I'm thankful for being able to get out of the bad situations that all my friends from back home are still in. I am thankful for life in general. I am thankful for everything I have and don't have. Life is great on its own”
(Ashley Nanney, former Southside star and current N.C. State cheerleader)
“I am thankful for being able to come home to good ole Beaufort County to eat collards and corn puddin’ with my family.”

Praying for Jon Martin

Praying for Jon
Commentary by KEVIN TRAVIS, Sports Editor
I’ve never taken the athletes I cover for granted.
From the first sporting event I ever covered -- a football game pitting the Bellevue Redmen against the Bucyrus Redmen some 16 years ago -- to today, I’ve always had an admiration and appreciation for all student-athletes.
I’ve grown close to quite a few, and call some my best friends to this day.
That’s why when tragedies strike, it hits me so hard.
I’ve dealt with untimely deaths before, from a suicide to a motorcycle crash to a car accident that have taken student-athletes, my friends, too soon.
I was reminded again Thursday just how fragile life can be.
That we should cherish each and every day.
Staff Sgt. Jon Martin is one of the first athletes I covered when I got into the sports writing profession. He was a superb cross country and track athlete for the Bellevue Redmen.
Jon was a leader and a classy guy.
It came as no surprise to me when I heard he was joining the military.
It did come as a surprise, and hit me like a ton of bricks, when I found out Jon, a 1993 graduate of Bellevue High School, was severely injured by a roadside bomb Nov. 9 while serving his country in Iraq.
Jon, who continued to run after high school as he took up marathons, cruelly lost his left leg by amputation caused by the blast.
He also had to have his spleen removed, while suffering a broken arm, pelvis and punctured lung.
Jon, in a medically-induced coma, is now in Germany fighting for his life. He’s on a dialysis machine because of failing kidneys, along with a ventilator.
Jon, who is a platoon leader for the 101st Airborne Division based in Fort Campbell, Ky., worked in air assault.
The tragedy hit harder when I read that Jon now has three young children -- Alaina, 8; Allie, 5; and Trenton, 10 months, counting on him.
Jon’s sister, Heather, married a good friend, Brad Bollinger, who is among the top three greatest male athletes I’ve ever covered.
Brad’s sister, Amber, is the best female athlete I’ve covered.
They’re strong physically and emotionally and I know they’ll be strong for the Martin family during this trying time.
And I know Jon will be strong, too.
I’m hoping and praying Jon recovers and does so quickly.
I can still picture Jon running through the woods leading the pack in his sweaty red uniform. And that’s the way I’ll remember him, being in charge and leading the way.
Donations can be sent to the Jon Martin Fund at First National Bank of Bellevue, 120 North St., Bellevue, Ohio, 44811, or call 419-483-7340.

3 alive

Three area teams are still alive in the NCHSAA Class 1-A state football playoffs. Two of them meet tonight when No. 7 seed Roanoke plays at No. 2 seed Williamston. The Tigers took a 26-20 overtime win against the Redskins in the final week of the regular season in Robersonville.

Plymouth, undefeated and the top seed, plays host to North Edgecombe. The Vikings have been streamrolling over everybody.

With very "winnable" games the following week, Plymouth and either Williamston or Roanoke could be meeting in the East Regional championship game.

I think Plymouth wins tonight, 35-7.
And I'll go with Roanoke 27-21 because Williamston, even though its at home, doesn't have all its weapons.
