Big day for Big Brad

Roach leads Catawba to victory
Brad Roach shone under the spotlight, throwing for one score and running for another to lead the No. 15 Catawba Indians to a 45-21 victory over the No. 23 Mars Hill Lions on Thursday.
The game at Shuford Stadium was broadcast on Fox Sports South and on CSTV.
Roach, a former standout at Williamston High School, wasn’t bothered by the big stage. The senior quarterback hit 17-of-23 passes for 249 yards and a touchdown. He also rushed for 18 yards and another score on five carries.
The win kept the Indians unbeaten at 5-0 overall and 1-0 in the South Atlantic Conference.
Mars Hill fell to 4-1, 0-1.
Roach set the tone early with a 54-yard touchdown strike in the first quarter.
The senior capped off a 21-point second quarter with a 1-yard touchdown run, coming with 36 seconds to play, to give the Indians a 28-0 lead.
For the season, Roach is 62-of-98 (63.2 percent) for 988 yards. He’s thrown eight touchdowns and five interceptions.
On the ground, Roach has run for 64 yards and three scores on 15 carries.
Roach and the Indians play host to Newberry College on Oct. 6.

Roach on TV

Former Williamston High School star Brad Roach will be on television Thursday night when his Catawba Indians play host to Mars Hill at 8 p.m. The game will be on CSTV and Fox Sports South (channel 36 in these parts). Roach is the starting quarterback for Catawba. It will be nice to see him under the lights and on TV.

ECU faces a big mountain

I'm working on a cold one, relaxing after just getting home following another busy Friday night of prep football. It was fun!
I'm thinking about ECU's game against West Virginia. It will be a tall task for the Pirates as the No. 5 Mountaineers are loaded, especially at running back.
I'm going with the Mountaineers in this one, 31-14.

What a crowd!

The crowd at Washington's home game against D.H. Conley on Friday night was incredible. It was the most crowded I've ever seen J.G. "Choppy" Wagner Stadium. The fans saw a great performance by the Pam Pack as the hometown boys took a 35-0 win over the Vikings.
The Pack is now 4-1 overall and 1-0 in the conference.

NFL... No Fun League

So Terrell Owens got fined for his TD celebration when he used the football as a camera and made light of the New England Patriots' filming fiasco. The rules do state that players can't use the football as a prop, but quit taking all the fun out of the game.
I want to see the Owens' celebrations. I want to see the Chad Johnson celebrations. Yes, players can act like "they've been there before," but I want to be entertained as well.

Great news

As I was driving home from work Tuesday evening, listening to sports talk radio and thinking about the bowl of ice cream I would devour while watching my DVD of The Office, I heard some great news. The announcer reported that Buffalo Bills tight end Kevin Everett, who sustained a "catastrophic" and life-threatening injury in Sunday's game against the Denver Broncoes, was doing better. The original thought was that Everett would never walk again after sustaining a spine injury. He had voluntary movement in his arms and legs Tuesday, which is good news.
The injury just goes to show what a violent sport football can be, even with the helmets and shoulder pads.

Baseball in the air

While ECU gets ready to play rival North Carolina at Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium on Saturday, Clark-LeClair Stadium will be busy today. The Pirate baseball team will hold its first practice of Fall Camp today.
It's offical -- Washington High School's Trent Whitehead is now a Pirate!

NFL players

Terrance Copper, who will begin his fourth season in the NFL, and the New Orleans Saints open the season Thursday at the defending Super Bowl Indianapolis Colts. Copper is a former standout at Washington High School and ECU.

Former Plymouth High School star Damien Linson, who played his college ball at Central Michigan, was cut Saturday by the Baltimore Ravens. Linson can still be signed to Baltimore's practice squad or get picked up by another team.
