2009 WDN All-Area Softball Team

2009 WDN All-Area softball team announced
By KEVIN TRAVIS
Sports Editor
Published: Thursday, July 2, 2009 2:23 AM EDT
Led by the likes of star pitcher Charity Watson, slugger Elizabeth Ange and a bevy of talent at every position, the area is well-represented on the 2009 WDN All-Area Softball Team.

Watson, who went 16-7 with a 0.33 ERA with 359 strikeouts, was tabbed the Pitcher of the Year. The Washington Lady Pam Pack star, who also led the team with a .383 batting average, will play at Pitt Community College next year.

Elizabeth Ange, a three-sport star with the Jamesville Bullets, was named the Player of the Year. The slick-fielding shortstop ripped three homers, drove in 20 runs and hit .365 in leading the Bullets to the state championships.

Riche Ange, who guided Jamesville to the state tournament for the first time since 2006, was named the Coach of the Year.

FIRST TEAM

There was an abundance of quality pitchers in the area this year, and five were named to the First Team.

Senior pitcher Emily Smith leads four Southside players on the First Team. Smith went 16-8 with a 1.87 ERA. She saved one of her best games for one her last, firing a perfect game against Jones County in the state playoffs.

Bear Grass pitcher Lauren Webb was solid on the mound and at the plate. The Bears’ senior star hit a robust .520 on the season.

Northside’s Amanda Beirne, an all-state performer, split duty between the mound and second base because of an injury. The senior was effective, hitting .400 with a home run and 10 RBIs. The future Meredith College softball player fanned 118 of the 229 batters she faced and had a sparkling 0.41 ERA.

Caroline Tetterton was called upon after Jamesville struggled out of the gates, and the freshman pitcher certainly didn’t disappoint. Tetterton went 14-4 and recorded 92 strikeouts. Two of her losses came in the state championships.

Pungo senior Brinkley Johnson’s won-loss record wasn’t sensational, as she went 8-10 with a 3.42 ERA and 133 strikeouts, but her leadership and character make her an easy choice. An all-state pitcher for the third straight year, Johnson hit a team-best .333 and she had a .525 on-base percentage.

Washington junior catcher Hayley Stowe is the catcher on the First Team. She hit .290 in a tough Coastal Conference, and was behind the plate for the Lady Pam Pack, making a solid battery with Watson.

The First Team infield includes a pair of Southside players, senior DeeDee Stanley and junior Kristen Ayers. Stanley blasted three homers, hit .392 and had a .536 on-base percentage. Ayers hit a sizzling .434, had a .544 on-base percentage and stole 21 bases on the year.

Rounding out the infield are Washington sophomore Kristi Wood and Williamston junior Cassie Harrell. Wood, Washington’s leadoff batter, set the table well by hitting .308, really coming on strong at the end of the year. Harrell hit a solid .438 while clubbing one homer, driving in 20 and scoring 21 runs. She ripped 32 hits on the season.

The outfield consists of Southside sophomore Bailey Hobbs, Williamston senior Jessica Clemmons and Jamesville junior Paige Lilley. Hobbs hit .375 and had 12 steals, Clemmons homered, scored 21 runs and hit .262 and Lilley hit .280 while driving in 11 and playing some exceptional defense.

Rounding out the First Team is Northside junior Amanda Daw, named the Designated Player. Daw, an all-state player, hit .353 while driving in 23 and scoring 20 runs.

SECOND TEAM

A pair of Terra Ceia eighth graders and a Williamston standout are the Second Team pitchers. Terra Ceia’s Paige Roberson and Morgan Boyd shared the MVP award for the Lady Knights. Roberson was 6-4 with a 2.05 ERA while hitting .397 and scoring 24 runs. Boyd went 6-4 with a 2.84 ERA while hitting .403, scoring 23 times and driving in 14 runs.

Harris Shepherd, a junior, went 9-8 with a 1.09 ERA for the Williamston Tigers. She fanned 131 batters. Shepherd was also solid at the plate, hitting .353 while driving in 15 runs.

Southside sophomore Shakeria Loma, who hit.380 and had 12 steals, is the Second Team catcher.

Making up the infield are Williamston junior Heather Jackson (.316, 26 runs, 11 RBIs), Southside senior Mandi Harding (.300), Williamston junior Haley Bowen (.288) and Washington senior Brittany Bryant (.235). Each player came up big in crucial situations offensively, and each flashed some solid leather defensively.

The outfield consists of Washington freshman Morgan Bryant, Brittany’s sister, Pungo’s Kim Clayton and Southside’s Caitlin Bogart.

Taylor Hollis of Bear Grass was tabbed the designated player.

Pack baseball falls

Pam Pack falls to Golden Demons
Had earned first playoff win since 1998
By KEVIN TRAVIS
Sports Editor
WILSON -- The Washington Pam Pack’s bus heading to Wilson Fike suffered a flat tire on the way to the game. It seemed to be a bad omen for Washington.
The Fike Golden Demons deflated the Pack’s season with a 3-2 victory in Tuesday’s second round of the N.C. High School Athletic Association Class 3-A state playoffs. It was the farthest the Pack had gotten since 1998, when it was also ousted in the second round.
Pam Pack coach Darin Vaughan had a short but poignant talk with his team at the end of the game.
“I told the guys that I’m really proud of them for what they have done over the last year and one week,” said Vaughan, who guided the Pack to a 12-11 overall record. “The strides that they have made and the work that they have put into this, along with the commitment they have made, I’m extremely proud of every single one of them.”
The Golden Demons (14-8), the third seed out of the NEW 6 Conference, overcame an early 2-0 deficit. The Pack, the fourth seed from the Coastal Conference, gave Fike extra opportunities with five costly errors.
“There were certainly some things that didn’t go our way,” Vaughan said. “When you lose 3-2 in the second round of the state playoffs, no matter how it happens, it’s going to be heartbreaking.”
The Pack jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second inning. Gator Moore drew a leadoff walk against Fike starter Mitchell Wheeler (2 runs, 4 hits, 2 strikeouts, 5 walks in 4 innings).
After a Gil Broadway one-out single, Cole Hartley drew a walk to load the bases. One out later, Jimmy Hardison earned the third walk of the inning, scoring Moore for the 1-0 lead.
Moore, who stole two bases and scored both of the Pack’s runs, came up big again in the third. He drew a two-out walk, stole second and raced home on a Justin Meekins single into center.
The Pack threatened again in the fourth, but right fielder Richard Carr robbed Austin Thompson of extra bases when he made a sensational catch with two outs and the bases loaded.
Washington went on to leave eight runners on base.
Pack sophomore starter Hatteras Brooks was brilliant through four innings. He scattered three hits while striking out three and walking two in four innings of shutout ball.
Fike tied the game at 2-2 in the fifth off Washington reliever Michael Goldberg, although Goldberg didn’t allow a hit. Wheeler drew a leadoff walk. David Gibbons then reached on a throwing error, and the two runners raced into second and third. Russell Ward’s sac fly scored Wheeler, while Gibbons trotted home when Tripp Sauls reached on another Pack error.
The Demons scored the game-winner in the sixth off losing pitcher Michael Robinson. Carr reached on an infield hit and Michael Brown followed with a bunt single. Carr was thrown out at third on Michael McLawhorn’s fielder’s choice.
It appeared Wheeler had then bounced into a potential inning-ending double play, but the Pack’s fifth error of the game allowed Brown to score for a 3-2 lead.
Fike reliever William Prince, who threw three innings of no-hit ball with three strikeouts, retired the Pack in order in the seventh to end it and get the victory.
The Demons will play at West Brunswick (19-5), a 7-6 winner over D.H. Conley, in the third round.
Vaughan and the Pack will regroup and get ready for next year.
“I want to see the same type of improvement that we had over the last year, and see if we can get the same type of commitment from some of those younger guys like we had from the senior class,” Vaughan said. “If we can do that, I’ll feel really positive about it.
“We have some big holes to fill with guys who have been mainstays in the lineup. It’s going to be somebody else’s turn to step in and get it done.”

1-A baseball
The three remaining area baseball teams alive in the 1-A state playoffs were ousted on Tuesday night.
Jamesville (17-3) lost 7-1 to East Bladen, Plymouth (11-11) fell 15-2 to Louisburg and Creswell (5-3) dropped a 5-2 decision to Princeton.

Pack softball advances

Watson’s perfect game lifts Washington
Pam Pack strolls to easy win over White Oak
Staff Reports
Charity Watson threw the fifth perfect game of her career, helping to lead the Washington Lady Pam Pack to a 16-0 five-inning win over White Oak in Tuesday’s first round of the N.C. High School Athletic Association Class 3-A state playoffs.
The Pack (15-6), the second seed out of the Coastal Conference, will play at Northern Nash (17-4), the NEW 6 champions, in Friday’s second round. Northern Nash advanced by knocking off Southern Wayne.
“We had excellent pitching and hitting,” Washington coach Doug Whitehead said. “We played a good all-around ball game. We put the ball in play and took advantage of their miscues.”
Watson retired all 15 batters she faced. The senior struck out 13 of those batters.
Watson helped her own cause by ripping three hits, including a double, and driving in three runs.
Kayla Spain had a pair of hits and drove in two, while Kristi Wood also had a pair of hits. Brittany Bryant doubled and scored two runs, while Lily Ann Arnold added an RBI double.

1-A softball
Southside, Williamston and Bear Grass were winners in the 1-A state softball playoffs.
Meanwhile, Northside and Columbia came up on the losing end.
The Northside Panthers (12-10) fell 3-0 to the Camden Bruins, while the Columbia Wildcats (2-7) dropped a 12-0 decision to Gates County.

Copper signs with Chiefs

Copper signs with Chiefs
By KEVIN TRAVIS
Sports Editor
Terrance Copper will be wearing new colors next year.
Copper, who will be playing for his fourth team in six years, signed with the Kansas City Chiefs on Tuesday. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.
A phone call to Copper late Tuesday evening was not returned.
Copper played last year with the Baltimore Ravens, but his season was riddled with injuries. He finished the season with two special teams tackles and no tackles for the first time in his career.
Copper, a former Washington Pam Pack and East Carolina standout, started his NFL career with the Dallas Cowboys and played there for two seasons.
The 6-0, 207-pound receiver played with the New Orleans Saints in 2006 and 2007, and was then released by the team during the 2008 season.
Copper signed with the Ravens during the 2008 campaign.
In a post-season interview, Copper said not being able to play much during 2008 would inspire him to work extra hard during the off-season.
“It definitely inspires me,” Copper said. “It really puts things into perspective about how much weightlifting needs to be a part of your off-season workout routine.”
Copper has 46 receptions for 600 yards and six touchdowns in his career. He also has 26 kickoff returns for 502 yards (19.3 average) and 41 special-teams tackles.
The Chiefs, who also signed wide receiver Bobby Engram on Tuesday, finished 2-14 last year.

Pirates complete sweep of Hawks

Get off to best start since 2004
By KEVIN TRAVIS
Sports Editor
GREENVILLE -- Trent Ashcraft picked a good time to break out of his early-season slump. After starting the season 0-for-11, the senior blooped a two-run, two-out, bases-loaded single to break a 2-2 tie in the sixth.
The hit highlighted a five-run inning that helped push the East Carolina Pirates (3-0) past the Monmouth Hawks (0-3), 9-2, on a chilly, sunny Sunday afternoon at Clark-LeClair Stadium. The win, coming in front of 2,592 fans, gave the Pirates the sweep and got the team off to its best start since 2004 (the team started 12-0 that year).
“I thought our pitching was good all weekend,” fourth-year coach Billy Godwin said. “I thought we played great defense. (Sunday) we got timely hits and busted the game open.
“I thought our guys came in focused. We were able to get a lot of guys in, get some different looks and move some guys around. I thought it was a very positive weekend.”
Ryan Wood (1-3, 2 RBIs) tacked on a two-run double and Stephen Batts (4-5, 2 RBIs) added an RBI-single in the five-run sixth inning to give the Pirates a 7-2 advantage.
Kyle Roller (2-3) led off with an infield single. Drew Schieber (2-3) reached on a bunt single and Trent Whitehead (0-1, run) drew a one-out intentional walk to load the bases. One out later, Ashcraft (1-5, 2 RBIs) collected his first hit of the season.
“I was just fortunate that I could get a pitch that I could hit, and be able to put it out there somewhere where they weren’t able to make a play on it,” said Ashcraft, ECU’s leadoff hitter. “It felt good, definitely.”
Wood followed with his two-bagger and Batts rapped his third hit of the game for the five-run lead.
Most of the damage came off Monmouth reliever Tim Ballard (0-1), who surrendered six runs on five hits in 1 2/3 innings.
The Pirates collected double-digit hits for the third straight day, finishing with 12. Batts led the way with his second four-hit day and finished with nine hits over the weekend.
“It feels great,” Batts said of his hot start. “It’s a good start.”
Monmouth took a 1-0 lead in the first. Brett Holland hit a leadoff single and raced into third on Chris Collazo’s (3-4) single. Nick Pulsonetti’s (2-3, RBI) sac fly scored Holland for the early lead.
ECU tied it in the fourth. Batts hit a one-out triple into right, breaking up John McDonald’s no-hitter. Brandon Henderson’s sharp single into left plated Batts.
McDonald gave up just the one run and two hits in his four innings of work.
Batts came through again in the fifth. Ashcraft reached on a throwing error and went to second on Wood’s sacrifice. Batts followed with an RBI-single into center, giving the Pirates a 2-1 advantage.
The Hawks tied it in the top of the sixth, chasing ECU starter Mike Anderson (two runs on six hits, four strikeouts, two walks in 5 1/3 innings) in the process. Tim McEndy and Ryan Terry had consecutive singles, which ended Anderson’s day.
Mike Casale greeted reliever Sthil Sowers with an RBI-single that knotted the game, 2-2.
Sowers (1-0) went 1 2/3 innings of relief and was credited with the win. The sophomore struck out one and gave up three hits.
The Pirates tacked on some insurance runs in the late innings. Jared Avchen’s sac fly in the seventh made it 8-2, while Jonathan Ratledge’s groundout plated another run in the eighth to cap the scoring.
ECU’s late relievers were effective. Bailey Daniels struck out all three batters he faced in the eighth. Joe O’Malley retired all three batters he faced to close it out, capping off the sweep.
‘These guys understand the importance of every game,” Godwin said. “(The sweep) is huge for your confidence. There were a lot of positives this weekend.”
The Pirates return to Clark-LeClair Stadium on Thursday to face No. 13 Oklahoma State in a 5 p.m. game.
ECU then plays host to the 6th Annual Keith LeClair Classic on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The Pirates face St. John’s on Friday, Oklahoma State on Saturday and College of Charleston on Sunday.

Lady Pack earns wild card
Area sending 15 teams to hoop playoffs
By KEVIN TRAVIS
Sports Editor
Several area teams will continue their quest for a state championship when the state basketball playoffs tip off Monday.
The boys tournament gets started Monday while the girls will begin tourney action Tuesday.
The Washington Lady Pam Pack earned a wild-card entry in the N.C. High School Athletic Association Class 3A bracket. Coach Allison Jones and her Pam Pack squad, 9-13 during the regular season, will travel to Wilson to face the Beddingfield Bruins in Tuesday’s opening-round game. The eighth-ranked Bruins, 23-3 overall, are the top seed out of the Eastern Carolina Conference. The winner will face the survivor between Hertford (7-13, Northeastern Coastal Conference second seed) and West Carteret (15-10, No. 3 seed in Coastal Conference) in Thursday’s second round.

1A BOYS
The top-seeded Mattamuskeet Lakers and Roanoke Redskins, along with the second-seeded Williamston Tigers and Creswell Tigers earned home playoff games on Monday. Meanwhile, Northside, Plymouth, Jamesville and Columbia will be on the road.
The Lakers (16-4), the Tideland Conference regular-season and tournament champions, play host to the Plymouth Vikings (12-7), the third seed out of the Albemarle Conference.
Williamston (9-15), the No. 2 seed out of the Atlantic Conference and the conference tournament champions, plays host to the West Columbus Vikings (13-10), the No. 2 seed from the Southeastern Conference. The Mattamuskeet-Plymouth winner squares off with the Williamston-West Columbus winner in Wednesday’s second round.
Roanoke (14-12) won the Atlantic Conference regular-season title. The Redskins will be home Monday against the East Carteret Mariners (8-14), a wild-card entry.
Creswell (20-5), the second-place finisher from the Tideland Conference, welcomes Louisburg into town. The Warriors (15-10) are the third seed from the Tar Roanoke Conference.
The Roanoke-East Carteret survivor faces the Creswell-Louisburg victor in the second round.
The Northside Panthers (10-15), the third seed in the Atlantic Conference, begin the playoffs at Perquimans. The Pirates (16-9) are the second seed out of the Albemarle Conference.
Jamesville travels to Weldon for its first-round game. The Bullets (8-12) are the Tideland Conference’s fourth seed while the Chargers (23-1) are the Tar Roanoke’s top seed.
The Northside-Perquimans winner battles the Jamesville-Weldon survivor on Wednesday.
The Columbia Wildcats (15-8), the third seed in the Tideland Conference, face the Southeast Halifax Trojans (12-13), the Tar Roanoke’s second seed, in the first round. The winner takes on the survivor between Camden (22-3, Albemarle Conference top seed) and Northampton-West (11-13, Tar Roanoke fourth seed).

1A GIRLS
Williamston, led by future East Carolina Lady Pirate Katie Paschal, is the only area team to earn a top seed on the girls side. The Lady Tigers (21-1), ranked fifth in the latest state poll, open tournament action Tuesday at home against the Northampton-West Hurricanes (7-14), a wild-card entry.
A Williamston victory lands them a date with either the Creswell Tigers or Northampton-East Rams in Thursday’s second round. Creswell (12-6), the No. 2 seed in the Tideland Conference, plays host to the Rams (10-14, No. 3 seed Tar Roanoke Conference) on Tuesday.
Coach Bill Lake’s Southside Lady Seahawks will also be home for the first round. Southside (15-8), the No. 2 seed in the Atlantic Conference, faces the South Robeson Mustangs (10-9), the No. 2 seed out of the Southeastern Conference.
The winner takes on the survivor between the Paxton Gwin-led Cape Hatteras Hurricanes (21-2), the top seed in the Tideland Conference, and the Camden Bruins (5-18), the third seed in the Albemarle Conference.
Roanoke (14-11), the third seed in the Atlantic Conference, travels to Perquimans (13-13), the Albemarle Conference’s second seed, on Tuesday. The survivor faces the winner between Weldon (22-2, Tar Roanoke top seed) and Columbia (7-16, Tideland Conference fourth seed) on Thursday.
Jamesville (14-10), the third seed from the Tideland Conference, travels to Gates County. The Red Barons (14-13) are the second seed in the Tar Roanoke Conference. The winner takes on the survivor between Manteo (21-5, Albemarle Conference top seed) and North Edgecombe (11-14, Tar Roanoke fourth seed) in the second round.
