Goddard an All-American

North Carolina safety Trimane Goddard has been named to the 2008 Walter Camp All-America second team.
The Walter Camp team is the oldest All-America squad in the nation, now in its 119th season honoring players across the country. Goddard is the first Tar Heel to earn All-America honors since center Jason Brown in 2004.
Goddard is tied for the national lead with seven interceptions. He also has 48 tackles, 1.5 tackles for losses, five pass breakups, two forced fumbles and one fumble recovery. Twice he intercepted a pass on an opponent’s final drive to seal a win (Miami & Duke), and against Notre Dame his fumble recovery clinched Carolina’s victory.
For his on-field efforts, he was named to the All-ACC first team and a Thorpe Award semifinalist. Goddard’s seven interceptions equals the third-best single-season effort by a Tar Heel.
Goddard was also named to the Rivals.com All-America Third Team.

Holtz staying at ECU

By Steve Franklin
WDN Sports Writer

East Carolina football coach Skip Holtz has withdrawn his name for consideration to be Syracuse University’s next head coach.

In a statement released prior to Thursday’s AutoZone Liberty Bowl Press Conference, Holtz said that he is too focused on preparations for the upcoming bowl game to seriously consider the Orange’s offer.

"While it is always flattering for others to have an interest in your abilities, I simply am too focused on our preparations for the bowl game and many other of our short and long-term goals to fairly evaluate what I feel is a promising situation at Syracuse." Holtz said. "I appreciate Syracuse's interest but that certainly is a direct reflection on what our players, coaches and the Pirate Nation have been able to accomplish, especially through a season that featured so much adversity."

Holtz was in New York on Monday and Tuesday and met with Syracuse University Director of Athletics Darryl Gross — both were in town for the National College Football Hall of Fame inductions where Holtz’s father, Lou and former Syracuse quarterback Don McPherson were being honored.

According to several different sources and a published report from Washington’s WITN Channel 7, the Orange offered Holtz a deal that was worth nearly $12 million.

Last Saturday, Holtz led the Pirates (9-4) to their first conference championship in 32 years with a 27-24 win over Tulsa in the Conference USA Championship Game.

He has posted a 29-21 record at East Carolina and has led the Pirates to three consecutive bowl appearances.

Holtz has been rumored for several other positions, including the vacancy at Auburn.

“Everybody wants to talk about that during this lull between the regular season and bowl games,” Holtz said. “Right now, our focus is on getting this team ready to play in the Liberty Bowl.”

When asked if this meant he was staying at East Carolina or if he might consider another job elsewhere, Holtz quickly replied, “I’m happy with the (job) I have. I am excited about the program we’ve built at East Carolina and I am just glad to be here at the Liberty Bowl.”

PIRATES TO FACE KENTUCKY IN AUTOZONE LIBERTY BOWL

From ECU Sports Information
PIRATES TO FACE KENTUCKY IN AUTOZONE LIBERTY BOWL
ECU, Wildcats To Meet In AutoZone Liberty Bowl's Golden Anniversary Game January 2
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – East Carolina will play Kentucky in the AutoZone Liberty Bowl’s Golden Anniversary Game on Friday, January 2, 2009 at 5 p.m. (ET). The game will be televised by ESPN.
East Carolina (9-4) will be making its third appearance in the AutoZone Liberty Bowl. The Pirates earned their spot in the game after defeating Tulsa 27-24 Saturday and winning the Conference USA championship. East Carolina played in the 1994 (vs. Illinois) and 1995 AutoZone Liberty Bowl games, defeating Stanford 19-13 in the 1995 contest.
"We are excited about the opportunity to represent Conference USA in the 50th Anniversary of the AutoZone Liberty Bowl," East Carolina Head Coach Skip Holtz said. "It's going to be a phenomenal trip. This is what we've talked about beginning with the first day of practice - the road to Memphis and what we've got to do to get there. I can't tell you how excited we are as a program and as a university to be there. It's a fitting reward for the team and the fans, because they put it out there on the line too."
“East Carolina has great fans and they're pumped up for the return trip to Memphis and the AutoZone Liberty Bowl after thirteen years,” said AutoZone Liberty Bowl executive director Steve Ehrhart. “Nearly four thousand Pirate fans waited an hour last night to welcome the team back home, that’s a sure sign they are dedicated and ready to celebrate a championship season in Memphis.”
Kentucky (6-6) will be making its first appearance in the AutoZone Liberty Bowl. Memphis area resident and starting defensive end Jeremy Jarmon leads the Wildcats’ defensive unit. The bowl trip to Memphis marks a return trip to the AutoZone Liberty Bowl for Kentucky head coach Rich Brooks, who played in the game for Oregon State in 1962.
“It’s great that we’re playing in the 50th anniversary of a game that I actually played in when the game originated in Philadelphia,” said Brooks. “I think it’s an honor to play a conference champion, particularly one that was as hot to start the season as East Carolina was, and the way they finished the year will be a great test for our program.”
“We’re excited to have Kentucky in our game for the first time in the Bowl’s 50-year history,” Ehrhart said. “To have Jeremy Jarmon lead the Wildcats back to his hometown and to have a legendary coach of Rich Brooks’ stature return to the Bowl after more than 40 years is unique and special as we celebrate the Bowl’s 50th anniversary.”
The Pirates and Wildcats have faced off once previously as Kentucky posted a 6-3 victory on Nov. 13, 1993 in Lexington. On the other hand, East Carolina will try to make it two in a row against Southeastern Conference members after handing South Carolina a 21-3 setback in 1999.
ECU will have ticket, travel, and other ancillary information available on Monday, December 8th. All seating will be assigned using the Pirate Club priority point system. When ordering online Pirate Club members must login first and then place the order. Tickets will be available through the Athletic Ticket Office and by phone at 1-800-DIAL-ECU. Office hours are 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Orders may also be placed online through the Online Ticket Center.

Sports figures give thanks

Commentary by KEVIN TRAVIS, Sports Editor

There are so many reasons I am thankful. I’m thankful to have such a wonderful, supportive mother (Mumsy) and two loving brothers. I’m thankful to have a job I love, and bosses I can rely on and truly admire.

I’m thankful for the opportunity to attend some great sporting events, and especially thankful for the chance to cover some great athletes.

I asked several current and former area sports figures what they are thankful for and, as we celebrate Thanksgiving today, these are their responses.

Haley Hiatt, Washington High School

“I’m thankful for being alive, and to have all of (the people) in my life (family, friends). I’m also thankful for my health and the awesome doctors that cured me (of Hodgkin’s disease).

C.J. Wilson, ECU defensive end, former Northside High School star

“I’m thankful for all the Lord’s blessings.”

Stephanie Holton, Shenandoah University basketball and former Columbia High School star

“I’m extremely thankful for all the love and support I get constantly from my entire family, especially my mom, dad and brother. They constantly are giving me encouraging words and supporting me in all I do. Without that, I wouldn’t have reached the point I’m at.”

Trent Whitehead, ECU baseball player and former Washington High School star

“I’m thankful for the time I will get to spend with my family and friends, to be healthy, to able to play baseball every day and all the food that I have been looking forward to.”

Blaine Prescott, Lees-McRae soccer and former Washington High School standout

“I’m thankful for coming home. I’m also even more thankful for the time I can spend with my family. Even just being away for several months has made me realize how great they really are.”

Joe Barber, Sendai 89ers (Japan) and former Terra Ceia star

“I’m thankful for a great set of parents and for good health.”

Kristen Slade, P.S. Jones teacher/coach and former Northside High School great

“I am thankful to have a job. And, of course, I’m thankful for my family and friends.”

Cor-J Cox, Olney Central College (Illinois) basketball, former Washington High School star

“I am thankful for my fans and family that is supporting me down there in lil Washington and I’m thankful for being able to do what’s right on the court and in school.”

Nicole Jordan, ECU softball and former Jamesville High School standout

“I’m thankful for the ability to still be playing the sport I love. I am also thankful for my friends, coaches and family that support and push me to be a better person and athlete.”

Gabby Newman, North Carolina State

“I am thankful to live in a country where we have so much freedom. I am thankful to have a roof over my head, clothes on my back, and three meals a day. Those make me better off than 90 percent of the world’s population. For that, I am grateful.”

Elton Coffield, BSW Sixers (Germany) and former Williamston High School star

“I’m thankful for my health, family, friends and being able to play basketball for a living.”

Lindsay Gladden, ECU graduate

“I am thankful for my family for always being there to support me 100 percent in everything I do. At the end of the day, I know I can count on my family.”

Holly Knot, Jamesville High School volleyball

“I’m thankful for my family and friends because without them I have no idea where I would be at.”

Davey Ann Burbage, Washington High School standout

“I’m thankful that I’m able to participate in all the sports I do and that my parents and grandparents are able to attend the events and enjoy every minute of it. I love them.”

Jamont Jones, Lenoir-Rhyne football and former Washington High School standout

“I’m thankful for all the opportunities that God has blessed me with. I have a great family and I’ve been blessed to play this game that I love on the college level. I’m also happy and looking forward to some great home cooking.”

Faith Hardison, Williamston High School, signed to golf at ECU

“I am thankful for many things God has blessed me with. I am thankful for my health, my supportive family, friends, abilities and to live in a country where I have freedom of religion.”

Brad Roach, former Williamston High School star

“I am thankful for my loving family, girlfriend, friends and community. Words can’t explain how grateful I am for all the love and support they have shown me throughout my whole life. I am truly blessed to have these loved ones around me.”

Samantha Smith, Tallahassee Community College basketball and former WDN Female Athlete of the Year (Washington)

“First and foremost I would like to thank God for being alive. Also, I’m thankful to have a talent to play basketball here in Florida, to have life, health and strength.”

Damien Linson, former Plymouth High School star

“I am thankful to Jesus for all of my blessings. I am also thankful for my beautiful mother and the rest of my family. Happy Thanksgiving to my grandmother, Martha Linson.”

Suzanne Lee, former WDN Athlete of the Year (Northside) and current ECU student

“I am thankful for my family, friends and the wonderful opportunities that God has given me in life.”

Angelo Sharpless, ECSU basketball/football and former Plymouth High School star

“I’m thankful for being able to make it to the next level, for the support that I have all over this nation from people that know me and from the ones that don’t.”

Lizzy Bruin, ECU volleyball standout

“I am thankful for my family and friends, the opportunity to be in college and play a sport I love, and being alive in general.”

Jeremiah Marable, ECSU football and former Southside High School standout

“I’m thankful for family and friends and the chance to get out there and play college football.”

Gerald Lawrence, ECU football, former Washington High School star

“I’m thankful for God, for keeping me healthy and safe to be able to play college football. I’m thankful for my mom, dad and family for their support throughout the years of me growing up. I’m also thankful for having a place to come home to, and spend time with family and friends. Overall, I’m just thankful for being here.”

Copper thankful to overcome injury

Copper thankful to overcome injury

By KEVIN TRAVIS, Sports Editor
Terrance Copper actually contemplated early retirement. A freak injury scared the Baltimore Ravens wide receiver/special teams ace enough to have a long talk with his wife, Kandy, about hanging up the cleats and shoulder pads for good.

Copper, a former standout at Washington High School and East Carolina University, suffered a neck injury while making a special teams tackle in the team’s 41-13 victory over the Houston Texans on Nov. 9. Racing down on kickoff coverage, Copper’s facemask struck the return man’s chest and his neck whipped back, causing nerve damage.

“It was definitely scary,” Copper said. “I couldn’t feel my arm. It felt numb; like it was hanging on there by the meat. I couldn’t move my arm and I couldn’t lift anything.”

Not only has Copper not been able to play in games since the injury, but the fifth-year veteran hasn’t even been able to practice.

“It’s frustrating,” Copper said. “I can’t help the team. I can’t even practice. I’m new to the team and I want to show them what kind of player I am.

“It’s a humbling experience. I’ve felt lost at times. I’m not used to missing playing time because of an injury. I was down all the time because all I could do was watch.”

Copper, who has also played with the Dallas Cowboys and New Orleans Saints in his NFL career, went through a series of tests to figure out what exactly was wrong with him. He had a CT scan, MRI, X-ray and even went to a spine specialist.

“I definitely thought about retiring when it first happened,” Copper said. “We didn’t know what was going on. The doctors finally figured out that I had nerve damage and I couldn’t practice until it was healed.

“It really scared me. I thought (the injury) was something that might keep happening, but the doctors said I just had to let it heal.”

Copper was so weak on his left side that he couldn’t hold a cell phone in his left hand for more than 30 seconds without dropping it. He also struggled to curl 20-pound weights.

“I definitely have a new outlook on things,” Copper said. “You can’t take the little things for granted. I’ve been rehabbing and getting stronger. I just realized that I have to treasure my body, and not just because I need it for my profession.”

Copper, who missed Wednesday’s practice, is hoping to rejoin the team today. He said it will be up to the coaches whether he can play for the Ravens (7-4) in Sunday’s game at the Cincinnati Bengals (1-9-1).

He’s hoping to help contribute to the team, and keep the Ravens’ playoff hopes alive. Baltimore returns home Dec. 7 for an evening game against the Washington Redskins. Baltimore closes out the season with a home game against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Dec. 14, an away game at the Dallas Cowboys on Dec. 20 and a home game against the Jacksonville Jaguars on Dec. 28.

“I’ll tell you something about Raven football, we work very hard,” Copper said. “I’ve been to Dallas and New Orleans and nobody practices like the Ravens.

“This is a good group of guys, from the coaches to the players. It’s a good place to play and I’m happy to be here.”

As Copper sits down at the Thanksgiving table for dinner with his family, he realizes what’s important.

“I’m very thankful for my family,” Copper said. “I’m thankful I wasn’t injured more badly where I could have been paralyzed. I’m thankful for my health. A lot of people take their health for granted, and I used to do that. I won’t be doing that any more.”

Copper, who wanted to ensure his fans that he doesn’t plan on retiring any time soon, passed some blessings along.

“I want to wish my friends, family and everybody in Washington a happy Thanksgiving,” he said. “Be thankful for the little things.”

Football Playoffs

Four area teams are still alive in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state football playoffs.

Washington, Williamston, Plymouth and Creswell will be playing in second-round games Friday night.

3A Playoffs
The No. 7 seed Washington Pam Pack (8-4) plays at No. 2 seed West Craven (12-0). The winner faces the survivor between No. 3 seed Kinston (10-2) and No. 6 seed SouthWest Edgecombe (9-2) in the third round.

1A Playoffs
The No. 3 seed Williamston Tigers (7-5) play host to No. 6 seed Northampton-West (6-6). The No. 2 seed Creswell Tigers (9-1) face the No. 10 seed Perquimans Pirates (7-5). The winner of those two games square off in the third round.

The No. 5 seed Plymouth Vikings (9-3), last year's 1A state champions, play at No. 4 seed Weldon (10-1). That winner takes on the survivor between No. 1 seed Jones Senior (11-1) and No. 8 seed Manteo (6-6).

Lady Cat Lindsay G.

Lindsay G. living her dancing dream with Charlotte Lady Cats

By KEVIN TRAVIS, Sports Editor

Lindsay G. has an amazing smile. In fact, it’s so good that she won “Best Smile” in a poll on the Charlotte Bobcats web site.

Now, the first-year Charlotte Lady Cat is putting smiles on fans attending Bobcats games.

“There are a lot of great things about being a Lady Cat,” said Lindsay G. (last names aren’t permitted because of Lady Cat policy).

“I think the best part is the feeling I get right before we take the floor to perform. Hearing the crowd cheer makes me appreciate all of the hard work and progress I’ve made in my dancing career, as well as knowing that I am doing what I absolutely love.”

Lindsay, a graduate of East Carolina University, is a former ECU Dance Team member. The 24-year-old said she enjoyed performing in front of Pirates fans at basketball, football and baseball games.

“They are all so different when it comes to crowd response,” she said. “Dancing for basketball has always had my heart. It is much more personal and the crowd really gets involved.

“There is nothing better than to cheer in front of thousands of fans and know that you are representing a great organization and team. The ECU dance team was introduced to baseball and football my junior and senior year. I did enjoy them both as well. Dancing on the dugouts was a very interesting experience. It was so new to the team, but we had a great time.”

Lindsay is the second former ECU Dance Team member to join the Lady Cat squad, giving the orange, black, blue, silver and white Bobcats a purple-and-gold feel.

Jenn W. is in her second year with the Lady Cats. Lindsay said it’s comforting having a former ECU teammate on the team.

“She’s been great with helping me adjust to this new lifestyle,” Lindsay said. “It is so different from a collegiate dance team, and I know that having her dance with me has made me feel at home since we danced for four years together at ECU.”

Brandii McCoy, Lady Cats Director and Choreographer, said Lindsay has made a positive and immediate impact with the fans.

“Lindsay is quickly becoming a crowd favorite,” McCoy said. “Lindsay represents the Lady Cats and the Bobcats organization beautifully as a talented dancer, great team player and positive role model in our community.”

McCoy said the former ECU dance team members are an asset to the squad.

“After seeing Jenn win the fan vote for best Lady Cat picture in our bracket tournament last year, I think ECU fans should be proud that two of their own are dancing in the NBA,” McCoy said. “If any of the other ECU Pure Gold dancers are like Lindsay and Jenn, send them our way after they graduate.”

Lindsay competed against some 200 participants to earn a roster spot. There were three cuts in all, and 21 girls made the team. While she admitted to some nervousness, Lindsay was also confident about making the team.

“I’m not going to lie, I definitely had some nerves going into it because I was unsure of what to expect,” she said. “I was also confident because of my previous dance experience.”

Lindsay began dancing at the age of 3 at the Pegge Lee School of Dance in Concord. She took tap, ballet and jazz for 15 years. Lindsay cheered in middle school and high school before landing on the ECU dance team.

Along with having to learn various dance routines for the Bobcats games, each dancer must stay in tip-top shape.

Lindsay said all the hard work is worth it, especially when it comes to performing in front of thousands of fans.

“The feeling is indescribable,” she said. “Cheering and leading the fans really makes me happy, along with having a passion for dance. Knowing that I am representing a wonderful and respected team makes me so proud to say that I am a Lady Cat. When I am out on the court, I know that this is what I am meant to do.”

The fans seem to appreciate Lindsay just as much as she appreciates them.

“The fans love what the Lady Cats do for our organization,” she said. “We always are very welcomed by them. I know that they respect and appreciate our hard work.

“We do sign autographs at the beginning of the game. It makes me feel good when children come up to me and want my autograph. I remember when I was a child getting the Charlotte Honeybees autograph and how it made a difference in my life. I will never forget that.”

Lindsay and the rest of the Lady Cats do much more than just perform at games. The Lady Cats take part in hundreds of events and appearances all over the Charlotte region.

“Anything from school to charity events, we are there helping the community,” Lindsay said. “(Being a Lady Cat) has been an incredible experience. I’ve dreamed of being an NBA dancer my whole life, and now I’m doing it. It feels great.”

It all gives Lindsay a chance to flash that award-winning smile.

Haley a true inspiration

Commentary by KEVIN TRAVIS, Sports Editor

When Haley Hiatt walked into the Washington High School gymnasium, my heart skipped a beat.

I had never spoken with Haley and didn’t know exactly what to expect. I was meeting her for the first time, and was there to do a story about her battle with cancer.

After I asked the first question, there was an awkward silence for a minute. It seemed much longer.

Maybe she was nervous. Maybe I was nervous.

I asked her a second question, and she answered immediately. Once we got past that first question, it was off to the races.

I was full of questions, some of which I wasn’t sure I should ask. But Haley was honest. Brutally honest.

The more questions for her, the better. Maybe it was therapeutic for her. Maybe it was therapeutic for me.

I was intrigued by her battle with Hodgkin’s disease. How she got it. When she got it. How she got rid of it.

It wasn’t an easy story for me to do. My father died of cancer and it ripped my heart out.

Talking about cancer isn’t exactly something I wanted to do.

But Haley made everything easy. This girl, all of 15 and without much hair, put me… ME… at ease.

Within minutes she and I were laughing. She had silly jokes and I laughed. I had silly jokes and she laughed.

It was the first time I met Haley, but it seemed like we had known each other for years.

Haley has that kind of endearing personality. You’re drawn to her by her smile. By her laugh. By her humor. By her story.

It’s a great story. A story of perseverance. A story of battling, and beating, cancer.

Haley is a high school student. She is a volleyball player, and a darned good one. She is a basketball player. She is a track athlete. She is a teenager.

But Haley is so much more. So, so much more.

Haley is an inspiration.

Haley has an incredible view on life. Her bout with cancer brought her closer to her family, closer to her friends and closer to God.

Through her ordeals, which included treatments of chemotherapy through a port that is still in her chest, Haley has held her head high and faced each challenge with a brave face.

She said she wants to be a role model for kids.

This girl, this amazing, beautiful, talented, caring and funny girl, is a role model for kids. But she’s also a role model for adults.

That hour I spent with Haley, talking about her cancer, laughing over silly jokes, taking photo after photo around the school, will be one that I will remember for a long time.

When Haley walked out of the Washington High School gymnasium, she took a piece of my heart with her.

Hiatt spikes her cancer

Hiatt spikes her cancer

By KEVIN TRAVIS, Sports Editor
Sitting on the bleachers inside the Washington High School gymnasium, Haley Hiatt pondered a question. Her big, brown, beautiful eyes — seemingly so full of life — stared intensely at the nearby court.

It makes sense. That volleyball court is Hiatt’s sanctuary.

It’s where she found peace. Something to look forward to on the most trying of days.

And Hiatt had many of them.

It all started when Hiatt noticed a lump in her neck.

“It felt like my neck was popping out,” Hiatt said. “I told my mom about it and she was freaking out. That was on a Thursday night. On Friday we were supposed to go shopping, but she took me to Washington Pediatrics instead. Then I went to the hospital in Greenville.

“It all just happened so fast. I was freaking out. I wasn’t thinking it was cancer. I thought maybe I just got hit in the neck and didn’t know it.”

After a few more tests and scans, it was determined Sept. 2 that Hiatt had Hodgkin’s disease, a cancer of the lymphatic system, which is part of the immune system. Cells in the lymphatic system grow abnormally and may spread beyond the lymphatic system. As Hodgkin’s disease progresses, it compromises the body’s ability to fight infection.

The devastating news was shocking, especially to a vivacious, outgoing, athletic high school sophomore.

“I thought that it would never happen to me,” said Hiatt, wearing a stocking cap of her beloved North Carolina Tar Heels. “I was shocked and upset. A few of my family members have had cancer, but never Hodgkin’s disease.

“I was thinking, ‘Why me?’ because I’m so athletic. It really ruined the volleyball season.”

Hiatt had surgery to remove the lump. The next step was chemotherapy, which uses specific drugs in combination to kill tumor cells.

Surgeons inserted a port into Hiatt’s chest. The area is numbed and then a needle is stuck in there to administer the drugs. The treatments last from 30 minutes to an hour.

It wasn’t a process she was looking forward to, but Hiatt knew the treatments were necessary.

“I know chemo is good for you, but I didn’t like it because with my last treatment, I got really sick,” Hiatt said. “I threw up and it was terrible.”

Hiatt had to endure three cycles, which came every three to four weeks. She received treatments on Fridays and Saturdays.

Dr. Beng R. Fuh, Specialty Pediatrics, Hematology/Oncology and Pitt County Memorial Hospital’s Pediatric Outpatient Center, has been treating Hiatt.

“Dr. Fuh is really nice,” Hiatt said. “The people there (at the doctor’s office) are all nice. They have something called a Child Life Program where they explain what’s happening and that really helped.”

When she learned of her cancer, Hiatt leaned on her parents, Norman and Kim Hiatt, for their unconditional love and support.

“They’ve helped me out a lot,” Hiatt said. “Everything happens for a reason. I think this happened to bring me closer to my dad. I never would really bond with him and now I do.

“I’m also going to be closer to God. I believed in God, but we didn’t go to church. Now we do. This definitely brought me closer to God.”

Hiatt also had plenty of support from buddies, including close friend Karlee Fottler, to help get her through the tough times.

“Karlee helped me a lot,” Hiatt said. “All my friends have been really supportive.”

Hiatt knew she didn’t have to go through her battle alone. But while some people were curious about Hiatt’s cancer, many shied away from her.

“Nobody would ask me questions about (the cancer),” said Hiatt, who was forced to miss several days of school. “I like it when people ask me questions. I don’t feel embarrassed.”

While the chemo did kill the cancer cells, it also produced some side effects. The brave Hiatt didn’t let them slow her down.

“When I tried out for basketball, I got really tired,” Hiatt said. “(The side effects are) different for other people. My fingertips got numb. Some people get mouth sores, but I don’t get those.”

One of the more noticeable side effects was the loss of Hiatt’s hair. While most teenage girls are concerned with their looks, Hiatt took it in stride.

“I got called Britney Spears (the popular singer who shaved her head at one point) when I first lost my hair,” Hiatt said. “That was kind of annoying.

“I cut my hair really short because it was falling out so bad. Then I told my mom to go ahead and shave it. I wore a hat to school the first day, but a couple days later I didn’t wear a hat. I didn’t really care what people say. Some days I’ll wear a hat and take it off in class. Some days I won’t even take a hat to school. That’s something that really doesn’t bother me. Now that I know I look good without hair, over the summer I might shave my head and donate (the hair).”

In fact, Hiatt was so confident with her “new look” that she played volleyball without a hat.

“Some of my teammates asked, ‘why are you playing volleyball? You don’t have any hair,’” Hiatt said with a laugh. “I said, ‘I don’t care; I’m here to play volleyball.’ I didn’t care what I looked like.”

The 5-foot, 9-inch Hiatt, who stretches to nearly 6 feet with the right shoes, said returning to her Pam Pack volleyball teammates and the court was a blessing. It was her sanctuary.

“It felt really good to get back on the court,” Hiatt said. “Just sitting on the bench doing stats, I hated doing that. Since it’s my favorite sport, I wanted to be out there.”

Coach Tara Hunter, a first-year coach with the Pam Pack volleyball team last season, said Hiatt maintained a positive attitude throughout the entire ordeal.

“Haley is amazing,” Hunter said. “She has a deep amount of courage. Not only did she battle Hodgkin’s disease, but she was a part of the team. When she felt okay, she came to practice and encouraged the girls. She pushed herself and overcame it.

“I thought she was a huge inspiration, not just to the volleyball team but to everybody at school.”

Hiatt, who played three matches early in the season before being diagnosed with the disease, made a triumphant return to the court at the end of the season. Despite being weak from the treatments, Hiatt still soared at the net.

“I think I did really good,” Hiatt said. “I had a lot of coaches tell me that they were really proud of me. One of them said, ‘you’re a hell of a player.’ All that made me feel good.”

Hiatt, who plans on being with the team each game next season, has an optimistic view of the team’s future.

“The team didn’t win any games (this year), but we started to work as a team,” Hiatt said. “We’re going to start practicing a lot earlier. We’re going to learn to do a lot of things that we didn’t learn this year.

“Next year we’re going to do much better.”

Though Hiatt said volleyball is her favorite sport, she also plays basketball and participates in track. She went to the regional meet and just missed out on qualifying for the state meet in the high jump event last year.

In the winter, Hiatt will be playing on the junior varsity basketball team. The team will be coached by Heather Recko, while one of Hiatt’s uncles, Anthony Clark, will assist.

“I know it’s going to take me a bit to get into shape, but I’m looking forward to it,” said Hiatt, who is interested in drawing and photography outside of school. “I’m hoping to lead the JV squad. I can’t wait.”

Hiatt, who eventually wants to earn a scholarship to play a college sport, will suit up for the Pam Pack with a clean bill of health. She got the words she was waiting to hear — “cancer-free” — on Nov. 7. While it was music to the ears of Hiatt, her family and friends, the spunky teenager didn’t exactly overreact to the great news.

“People asked me if I cried, but I didn’t,” Hiatt said. “I already knew it was gone. I could feel it. I didn’t get excited, but yet, it was cool. I just knew it was gone.”

Hiatt will still have to return to the doctor for follow-up visits to make sure she remains healthy. The port will remain in her chest for another six months.

But that won’t stop the unwavering Hiatt from living it up.

After all, she’s spiked cancer.

Benefit concert planned

A Country Christmas Extravaganza concert featuring Don Cox and Friends will be held in December to help with Haley Hiatt’s medical bills. Cox, a national recording artist from Belhaven, is putting on the concert for Hiatt.

The concert, tentatively scheduled for Dec. 13, will be held at Northside High School. The exact date and time will be announced at a later time.

Those wanting to make donations may send them to: Haley Hiatt Fund, c/o Lila Everett, Treasurer, 552 Firetower Lane, Bath, North Carolina, 27808.

Eight area teams qualifying for football playoffs

Eight area teams qualifying for football playoffs
By KEVIN TRAVIS, Sports Editor
Washington will face a familiar foe in the first round of the N.C. High School Athletic Association Class 3-A state playoffs. Just two weeks after beating the Havelock Rams, 21-7, the Pam Pack will face its Coastal Conference rival in Friday’s first-round playoff game.
The game is slated to start at 7:30 p.m. at J.G. “Choppy” Wagner Stadium.
“I think it will be a heated game,” Washington fifth-year coach Sport Sawyer said. “The last game (Havelock) came here fired up and we were fired up, so I think it will be the same. It will be a huge game.”
Seven area teams earned playoff bids for the 1-A state playoffs.
The No. 3 seed Williamston Tigers (6-5), the Atlantic Conference champions directed by head coach Asim McGill, play host to No. 14 seed Northside (2-9). Coach Keith Boyd’s Panthers, coming out of the Atlantic Conference, qualified despite falling to Southside in Friday night’s Anchor Bowl.
Coach Robert Cody’s Plymouth Vikings (8-3), last year’s 1-A state champions and a No. 5 seed, welcome the No. 12 seed Northampton-East Rams (4-7) into town.
Coach Wayne Rodgers and his Tideland Conference-champion Creswell Tigers (8-1) earned a No. 2 seed. The Tigers will play host to the No. 15 seed Rosewood Eagles (2-7), who hail from the Carolina Conference.
The Roanoke Redskins (4-7) also earned a home playoff game. Coach Brian Paschal’s squad will play host to the Perquimans Pirates (6-5), a No. 10 seed out of the Albemarle Conference.
Coach Richie Ange’s Jamesville Bullets (4-6), a No. 9 seed, will visit No. 8 seed Manteo (5-6). The Redskins compete in the Albemarle Conference.
The No. 13 seed Mattamuskeet Lakers (3-7) also earned a playoff spot. Mattamuskeet, which plays in the Tideland Conference, visits the No. 4 seed Weldon Chargers (9-2).
The Pam Pack (7-4) enters the 3-A playoffs as the No. 7 seed, while Jim Bob Bryant’s Rams (8-3) are the No. 10 seed.
“I figured we’d be around an eight seed,” Sawyer said. “I didn’t think we’d be playing a conference team to start the playoffs, especially since we played them two weeks ago.”
Sawyer is glad the team will open the playoffs at home for the second consecutive season.
“It’s good to play at home,” Sawyer said. “Our fans were very good (Friday night during a 41-14 win over West Carteret). I think being at home will spark some interest.”
Washington will be looking for its first playoff victory since 1999, when the Pack posted a 51-7 victory over Eden Morehead in the first round. Washington fell 41-40 in double-overtime to South Granville in last year’s playoff game.
“We’re not worrying about the past,” Sawyer said. “We’ve been having some fun playing football the last couple weeks and that’s what we plan to keep doing. I’m very excited about it.”

2008 PREP FOOTBALL PLAYOFFS

Below is an agate version of the NCHSAA football brackets. I typed these as
we attempted to post the brackets on the NCHSAA web site. Because of the
extraordinary traffic and to aid in getting them out in as many venues as
possible, I'm sending these.

PLEASE NOTE THAT THESE ARE PRELIMINARY. SCHOOLS WILL CHECK THEM TO MAKE SURE
RECORDS WERE SUBMITTED CORRECTLY ETC (WE'VE ALREADY CAUGHT A COUPLE OF THOSE
WHICH WERE INCORRECT). IN THE NEXT HOUR OR SO, WE SHOULD GET ANY
CORRECTIONS.

I'll plan to resend these later this evening, if necessary, with any
corrections. The last bracket is being posted on our web site literally as
we speak.
