Hiatt fighting with a smile (appears in Sports Illustrated)

By KEVIN TRAVIS, Sports Editor

Every time Haley Hiatt is faced with a new challenge, she confronts it head-on, and with a smile.

Hiatt, a Washington High School sophomore, went through rounds of chemotherapy to battle Hodgkin’s disease, which was initially diagnosed Sept. 2.

She thought she had battled her last foe when she was given a clean bill of health Nov. 7.

However, the affable Hiatt, a multi-sport standout with the Pam Pack, is going through another fight. She is now in the midst of radiation treatments.

“When I first heard it, I really didn’t know what it was,” Hiatt said, her voice slightly raspy after enduring a radiation treatment earlier Tuesday. “The way my parents (Norman and Kim Hiatt) reacted, I knew it wasn’t all that great. It made me kind of scared at first because my grandfather had to go through it.

“I hope this is it but, if I have to do more, then that’s what I have to do.”

Hiatt puts on a brave face with each challenge she faces.

“As my mom says, I have an all-about-me attitude,” Hiatt said. “If you don’t have that attitude, it won’t work out for you.”

Hiatt keeps that positive attitude whether in the hospital or on the playing field.

Hiatt’s accomplishments are highlighted in Faces in the Crowd in the Feb. 2 edition of Sports Illustrated.

“I think it’s amazing (to be in Sports Illustrated),” Hiatt said.

“I’d rather be on the cover,” she added with a laugh. “That’s something to shoot for in the future.”

WHS athletic director Darin Vaughan is proud of Hiatt.

“Haley is a great example of what a student-athlete stands for,” Vaughan said. “She has been extremely courageous through all of this, and I couldn’t be happier for her.

“Hopefully, she continues to be involved with athletics at WHS and continues to be a role model for which she has proven to be over the last year-and-a-half.”

The court inside the gymnasium at WHS has proven to be a saving grace for Hiatt. She played the final six matches of the volleyball season in the fall, and is averaging 12.0 points and 10.0 rebounds with the Washington Pam Pack junior varsity girls basketball team this winter.

“I’m really liking basketball,” Hiatt said. “I think I’m getting better every year. I think I’ll be ready for varsity next year.

“My uncle, Anthony Clark (an assistant on the junior varsity team), has really helped me out.”

In her first game since being given the clean bill of health, Hiatt scored 10 points in a 59-31 win over D.H. Conley.

“Like (North Carolina coach) Roy Williams says, he’s always nervous before games,” said Hiatt, a diehard Tar Heels fan. “I was nervous that first game. That’s how I always am whether it’s basketball, volleyball or track. I think it’s good to be nervous.”

Heather Recko, the Pam Pack junior varsity coach, said Hiatt is “a leader with great spirit. She has a big heart and she’s a good girl.”

Despite having to go through 14 days of radiation, which is performed at the Marion L. Sheppard Cancer Center, Hiatt is determined to not miss any time on the court. The 5-foot, 9-inch leaper also plays on a traveling volleyball team.

“I’m able to play as much as I want,” Hiatt said. “Sometimes I’m just out of breath.”

She admits that the radiation treatments can be rough.

“Radiation really makes you lose your voice,” said Hiatt, who still has a port in her chest used for chemotherapy. The port may come out in three months.

“It makes your throat sore. I had some yogurt (Monday) and it hurt to swallow. It feels like there is a knife just stabbing my throat.”

While Hiatt continues her battles, she is happy with how she’s looking these days. The chemotherapy treatments zapped Hiatt of her hair, but her brown locks are quickly growing back.

“It’s amazing,” Hiatt said with a big smile. “I can’t stop touching it. It’s so soft.”

Hiatt said the support she has received has helped make her battle somewhat easier.

“My family, including my brother, Chase, and friends have been great,” Hiatt said. “The school has been great, too.”

Kim Hiatt said Haley’s ability to play athletics has also helped her daughter.

“(Sports) is all she looks forward to,” Kim said. “She loves sports and always has. She’s always had a lot of energy.

“All things considered, this really has not slowed her down. She’s wanted to be there and I think that has given her the strength to get through this. I think she’s cried twice, maybe, through this whole thing. She is just extremely strong. She’s a good kid.”

With all the treatments Hiatt has had to endure, the costs are beginning to mount. Kim Hiatt said she truly appreciates all the help and donations everybody, including First Church of Christ, First Baptist Church, Don Cox and Lila Everett, has provided.

“It’s been phenomenal,” Kim said. “It really has. To be from such a small town and people coming out of the woodwork, people we’ve never even met sending us checks, it’s amazing.

“I can’t thank the people of Beaufort County and eastern North Carolina enough. It’s been overwhelming.”

If people want to help out, they may contact Ty Carter, President of the Kiwanis Club, or First Church of Christ, to send a donation.

Hiatt will continue her battle while wearing her big smile. She offered words of encouragement to those in similar situations.

“If you don’t believe in yourself and you don’t have confidence in yourself, you’re not going to be able to get through it,” Hiatt said. “You just have to have confidence, stay positive and be willing to get through it.”

Paschal to play for ECU

Williamston's Katie Paschal will verbally commit to the East Carolina Lady Pirates on Monday.

Paschal averaged 25 points (third in the state), six boards and five assists per game last year with the Tigers, leading the team to an Atlantic Conference regular season and tournament championship, an East Region sectional title, a 27-game winning streak and, at one point, a No. 1 ranking amongst 1-A schools in the state.

Paschal, who was voted the WDN Volleyball Player of the Year last fall, is off to another exceptional start with Williamston this season.
