ECU’s baseball opener postponed
COLUMBIA, S.C. -- The No. 24 East Carolina Pirates will have to wait one more day to begin their season. The Pirates and No. 2 South Carolina Gamecocks had their baseball season-opener postponed Friday because of rain.
ECU and South Carolina will play a doubleheader today. The first game at Sarge Frye Field will begin at 1:30 p.m. and the second game will start at 7 p.m.
The third game of the series will begin Sunday at 1:30 p.m.
ECU senior T.J. Hose, 6-5 with a 3.97 ERA last year, will face South Carolina junior right-hander Mike Cisco, 6-3 with a 3.84 ERA in 2007, in today’s first game.
Freshman Seth Maness will get the starting nod for the Pirates in today’s second game. The Gamecocks will counter with sophomore right-hander Blake Cooper, who was 7-2 with a 4.48 ERA a year ago.
ECU junior Justin Bristow, who went 1-6 with a 9.30 ERA at Auburn last year, will start Sunday’s series finale. Junior lefty Craig Thomas, 0-0 with a 2.45 ERA in 2007, will start for South Carolina.
Pirate Classic rained out Friday
GREENVILLE - Constant rainfall in the Greenville area forced a change in the schedule of the 2008 Pirate Classic softball tournament. Four contests will be played today, while the tournament will close with five games on Sunday.
Appalachian State and Syracuse will square off in today's first contest at 10 a.m., while East Carolina begins tournament play at 2 p.m. against Syracuse. The Pirates will then play Purdue at 4 p.m.
ECU will play Penn State at 3 p.m. Sunday, followed by a 5 p.m. contest against Appalachian State.
All games will take place at the ECU Softball Field.
